Just one of those things

Out walking early this morning near the river, I happened to spy a pale brown dragonfly with delicate, translucent wings just a few feet in front of me flitting along at the same pace. As I admired its gentle, hovering flight, the line from a favorite song – “a trip to the moon on gossamer wings” – popped into my head. But before I could consider whether it was a Flame Skimmer, Variegated Meadowhawk, Blue-eyed Darner, Western River Cruiser, or more likely, a Pale-faced Clubskimmer, an iridescent blue and white Tree Swallow like the ones we so often see doing aerial acrobatics near our bridge, zoomed past like a miniature Messerschmitt, expertly executed a mid-air snatch, and flew off with a tasty breakfast. Ain’t nature grand! It was just one of those things.

  1. A lovely homage to JHC, and nature, although I’m not sure he would have used the Messerschmitt metaphor…maybe a Spitfire instead. btw, I think we saw quite a few Pale-faced Clubskimmers at the bar at BHCC.
